What is Montessori?

Montessori is an educational child-centred approach that focuses on the holistic development of children. It is built upon the belief that children are naturally curious with an innate desire to learn. Montessori classrooms are prepared with specially designed learning materials to create an environment that fosters independence, hands-on exploration, and self-directed learning. By respecting each child’s individual pace and interest, Montessori method instils a sense of joy and fulfilment in their educational journey.

Who was Dr Maria Montessori?

Dr Maria Montessori (1870 – 1952) was an Italian physician, educator, and the pioneer behind the Montessori method. She graduated from the University of Rome in 1896 and became one of Italy’s first female physicians. Her early medical career was primarily focused on psychiatry. During her time working with special-needs children, it driven her to question and study the existing educational practices of her time. Her passion for creating a better educational system led her to develop the Montessori method, which has since become a globally recognised approach to education. The first Montessori school, Casa dei Bambini (House of Children) was first opened in 1907 in the slums of Rome, Italy. There are now over 20,000 Montessori schools worldwide.

What is Montessori at home?

Montessori philosophy can be implemented in any home, regardless of the size or budget. As in a Montessori classroom, a Montessori home is prepared in a way that is safe, simple, and inviting, to foster the active participation of the child which enable them to experience a sense of belonging and accomplishment as valued contributors to the family’s daily lives. Parents and caregivers select age-appropriate toys and materials that are align with their child’s developmental stage and interests. These toys and materials are organised in an orderly and accessible manner, allowing the child the freedom to engage in activities that capture their interests and challenge their abilities.

Is it important?

Absolutely. After all, Montessori is a way of life and should extend beyond the classroom walls. It is about fostering a child’s curiosity, independence, and a sense of purpose in their daily lives. It is about embracing that each child is a unique individual with their own interests, abilities, and pace. It is about respecting and supporting their individuality on their own remarkable journey in this world. It is about becoming the child’s guide and gentle leader. With the right tools, every parent and caregiver can create a nurturing learning environment for their children at home, right from birth.
