Mini Knobbed Cylinders

The cylinders refine and apply your child’s ability to discriminate dimensions and prepare for mathematics activities involving comparison, grading, and seriation. They initially complete a single block of cylinders, later the blocks are combined and the interrelationships in dimensions (diameter and height) are experienced. A set of 4 blocks, each block contains 5 cylinders with knobs, and each cylinder fits into its respective hole.

Block 1: The cylinders vary in two dimensions: The diameter increases from 1cm to 3cm
The height remains constant at 3cm

Block 2: The cylinders vary in one dimension: The diameter remains the same.
The height increases from 1cm to 3cm

Block 3: The cylinders vary in three dimensions: The diameter increases from 1cm to 3cm
The height increases from 1cm to 3cm

Block 4: The cylinders vary in three dimensions: The diameter increases from 1cm to 3cm
The height decreases from 3cm to 1cm

WHEN TO INTRODUCE: 3 years

SAFETY: Montessori activities often involve objects with small parts and may have sharp edges. Adult supervision is required to make sure they are using the objects safely.
